About Cliviger Fishponds

This site was acquired in 1987 in a completely derelict state. The site is mentioned in local historian Titus Thornber's book 'A Pennine Parish-the history of Cliviger'.Titus indicated in his book that he would love to see the ponds restored in his lifetime and was over the moon when I showed him round the site after restoration in 1991. All the trees along the roadside bank have a tree preservation order on them, as the site is a county biological heritage site with links to Dr. Thomas Whittaker some 200 years ago.
This was a massive restoration job carried out by Geo Noblet Plant of Blackburn.
The Society owns this site including Royd Wood and allow public access but dogs must be on a lead.
Two large floating islands were installed on the top pond and two smaller floating islands were installed onto the bottom pond to provide refuge for fish to escape from predatory birds.

The improvement work at Cliviger Ponds is now just about completed (Sept 2016).
Drainage on the paths has been improved. Trees have been pruned and fallen trees removed. Fishing pegs have been removed and/or repaired -reeds have also been thinned out. The silt trap at the inflow to the top pond has been rebuilt. The spillway and silt trap below the bottom pond has also been rebuilt.
The small area of parking opposite the access gate has also been cleared and improved.-now room for 3-4 cars.
This work has been funded by the Lancashire Environmental Fund and Cliviger Parish Council (Funded by Scottish Renewables’Coal Clough Windfarm.

Thanks very much to both our funders.
